How do I choose the right cocktail smoker kit?

Aged & Charred offers a variety of cocktail smoker kits with different contents, and at prices for all budgets. It can be a little overwhelming, so here's a simple breakdown:

The Smoke Lid Kit includes everything you need to smoke a cocktail from the moment it's opened. If you're just looking for a kit to get started, this is the one for you. Already have butane? There is a non-butane version too.

The Premium Kit includes everything in the Smoke Lid Kit, plus it comes with a handsome storage box. Will your kit be sitting out on the home bar? Is the kit for someone who has a taste for high end goods? If so, then this is the kit for you.

If you have extra space on the home bar, consider the Smoke Barrel Kit. The Smoke Barrel Kit also includes everything needed to smoke a cocktail from the moment it's opened. You can smoke one or multiple cocktails at once, making it a great choice for entertaining. In addition, it looks great on the home bar.

How long does it take to smoke a cocktail?

Maybe 20 seconds. Literally, once the torch is filled with butane the Aged & Charred Smoke Lid infuses a drink with smoke in seconds. Let the smoke sit a few more seconds and it is ready to be served. Allowing the smoke to rest on the cocktail for too long (ex; > 20s) can over-smoke the cocktail.

Do i need a butane torch or will a lighter work?

A butane torch is necessary. Lighters won't push the smoke down in the glass like a torch will. The Smoke Lid kit includes butane.

My torch doesn't work. How do I fix it?

Culinary torches can be a little finicky at times. Here are some troubleshooting tips:

  1. Make sure you are holding the torch upside down when you add butane
  2. Place the butane nozzle in the hole located at the bottom of the torch and pump the butane 3 - 4 times, holding each pump for 1 - 2 seconds.
  3. Light the torch while it is upright then tilt the torch head down to burn the chips
  4. There is a dial on the bottom of the torch which may need to be turned + or - to adjust the flow of butane
  5. If the torch won't light, try turning the butane flow +
  6. If the torch stays lit for too long turn the butane flow -

Will spice or herb mixes work with this, or can only wood chips be used?

Some spices and herbs will work, just be careful which ones you use as some are probably quite potent. Also, be careful not to use anything which might clog the screen, such as dried fruit.

How many cocktails will one container of wood chips make?

This cocktail smoker includes enough oak chips for about 50 smoked cocktails. It only takes a pinch of chips per cocktail. So, one container of wood chips goes a long way. Additional wood chip flavor options are available.

I'm thinking about buying a cocktail smoker as a gift. Does it come in a nice box?

Yes, it does. All of our cocktail smoker products come packaged in nice packaging which makes for a great gift presentation.

How much do cocktail smokers cost?

The price varies depending on the type of smoker and what is included. Most cocktail smokers require a heat source (torch or electric), wood chips, fuel (butane), and a lid to contain the smoke. The last thing anyone wants is to receive a kit and then realize they need to buy more before they can start smoking drinks. Our cocktail smokers come complete with everything you need. Just be sure to get the 'with butane' version if you don't already have a can of butane.

What are some good smoked cocktail recipes?

Smoke pairs great with whiskey, bourbon, and rum based cocktails since they already contain some smoke flavor from their aging process. Check out our smoked cocktail recipes for more ideas and inspiration.

Can I use the wood chips to age whiskey?

Yes. Whiskey gets much of its flavor from the wood barrels it is aged in. The aging process takes a long time when you have such a large amount of whiskey in a 53 gallon whiskey barrel. However, when you use wood chips on a single bottle of whiskey, you'll notice the flavor in as little as 24 hours. The Fruit Pack, Variety Pack, and Bold Pack of wood chips from Aged & Charred all work great for rapidly aging and flavoring whiskey.
