Smoked Caribbean Rum Zing

Smoked Rum Cocktail
Whiskey isn't the only liquor which pairs well with smoke. Rum, especially dark rum, is also a great dance partner for some extra smokey flavor. Dark rum gets it's color from the charred oak barrels it is aged in. The same way whiskey gets its darker color from charred barrels.
Instead of being bottled right after the distilling process like clear or white rum, dark, sometimes called 'black' rum, is aged in charred barrels. The barrels are charred with flames and smoke, hence the natural bond between dark rum and smokey flavors.
After experimenting with several Caribbean-style rum drinks, we ultimately ranked the Rum Zing highest of the lot we tested. The flavor infusion of rum, orange, ginger, and cherry is brought to life with the toasted smokey flavor added by the Drink Smoker Kit from Aged & Charred. Top these liquid ingredients off with a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg and let this drink take you on a mental vacation.

Ingredients
- 1.5 oz dark / black rum
- 1.5 oz orange juice
- .5 oz orange liqueur
- 2oz ginger ale
- .5oz of grenadine
- Dash of cinnamon
- Dash of nutmeg
- Wood chips for cocktail smoker
- Mint sprig
Instructions
- Fill a 16oz glass half full with ice. (A mason jar works great for this smoked cocktail recipe.)
- Pour rum, orange juice, orange liqueur, ginger ale, and grenadine over ice into drink and give it a good stir. Grenadine will settle to bottom if not stirred well.
- Add a splash of grenadine, dash of cinnamon, and dash of nutmeg to the top of the drink
- Add a small pinch of peach flavored wood chips from Aged & Charred to the Smoke Lid. Smoke cocktail and keep covered for about 10 - 15 seconds. The longer it is covered the more smoke flavor will be added to the cocktail, but be careful not to over smoke the drink.
- Add mint sprig garnish and serve while smoke is still settled on the drink
